It feels good to hold an actual book in your hand. You can take it outside and
you can feel the pages between your fingers. So, why online autobiographies?
Because online books have advantages too. As I wrote my autobiography I always envisioned it
being an online book even though not everyone is comfortable with online books yet. And having
finished writing the book I feel that the content of the book obligated me to at least try the
online book route.
- First and foremost is the fact that having an online book allows me to include mixed
media. I've written lots of songs and done animation and things like that which would be
nearly impossible to include in a regular book. Online books are great when parts of the book
need to be listened to.
- And having an online book allows me to link to things. That's nice when you
want to have an appendix or index at the back of the book that links right back to the proper
page. And I've written about web pages that I've designed in the book and it's nice to be able to link
to those too.
- Online publishing is almost affordable. I can get a book printed for about
50% of what I would want to sell the book for. And local bookstores are willing to sell books
by local authors for around 60%. Leaving -10% for me. With this website, the person that
writes the book actually gets the money you pay for the book.
- A lot of this book is about preserving the air and the water and the trees.
So it's probably a good idea not to chop up a bunch of trees to print a bunch of copies that
might end up just sitting on a shelf unsold.
- I have friends all over the world (really I do) and this way there are no
outrageous shipping costs. No shipping costs of any kind actually.
- Imagine writing a book and then noticing you've made an error. Now imagine being
able to correct the error in everyones copy of the book just by clicking save. Nuff said.
But best of all, if you need the feel of paper in between your fingers or can't spend long hours
reading at the screen, there's nothing to stop you from printing out chapters and taking them
with you.
